The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice

Posted on by Ben Rothke

The notion of advanced persistent threats (APT) and cyber warfare has reached the mainstream press.  As nation states are attacking corporate networks, the need to take defensive action is an imperative.

In The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice, authors Steve Winterfeld and Jason Andress provide an introduction to the topic of the various aspects of cyber warfare.

Topics such as the basics of cyber warfare, military doctrine, cyber doctrine, offensive and defensive tactics, state-sponsored attacks, procedures and more are detailed.

Wikipedia defines cyber warfare as politically motivated hacking to conduct sabotage and espionage. It is a form of information warfare sometimes seen as analogous to conventional warfare.  Given the scope of conventional warfare and cyber warfare, at under 150 pages, the book takes a very high-level approach to the topic, and lacks details necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

For those looking for a more compressive guide, books such as Inside Cyber Warfare: Mapping the Cyber Underworld and Reverse Deception: Organized Cyber Threat Counter-Exploitation may be better starting points.

For those looking for a general introduction to the topic, The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice is a good place to start.
